Small Larvae, Big Impact: Umah Pupa Redefine Waste Management in Bali

Sustainability isn’t just a concept to be discussed; it’s a practice to be lived. This week, the Coco Social Fund team had an inspiring deep-dive session with Umah Pupa, a visionary social enterprise from Gianyar dedicated to circular economy solutions and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) organic waste management.

Our meeting focused on more than just technology, it was about creating a bridge between environmental stewardship, education, and community empowerment. At the heart of our discussion was a shared belief: to solve Bali’s waste crisis, we must view “trash” not as a burden, but as a valuable resource within a circular economy.

Early Education as a Catalyst for Change

We are thrilled to announce that the first milestone of this collaboration will take place at SD Negeri Cepaka. Coco Social Fund and Umah Pupa are joining forces to host an interactive organic waste workshop for the village youth.

We believe that systemic change begins in the classroom. By introducing BSF technology and composting to students at an early age, we aren’t just teaching them to sort trash, we are shifting their paradigm. We want the next generation in Cepaka to understand that food scraps have value and play a critical role in regenerating our local ecosystem.

Why BSF Technology?

For those new to the concept, Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae are nature’s ultimate recyclers. They can consume organic waste at an incredible rate, turning it into high-protein animal feed and nutrient-rich fertilizer. By implementing this at a community level, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste sent to Bali’s struggling landfills while creating useful byproducts for local farmers.

The Path Ahead

A huge thank you to the Umah Pupa team for their passion and shared vision. This workshop is just the beginning of a long-term commitment to making Cepaka a model for sustainable village life.

We know that these “small steps“, much like the larvae themselves, are capable of creating a massive, lasting impact for our planet.
