Walk down the roads of Bali during the festive seasons of Galungan and Kuningan, and you will find the island lined with penjor—the towering, gracefully curved bamboo poles that symbolize prosperity, gratitude, and Mount Agung. But in Desa Serangan, the local community has taken this ancient art form to a magnificent new level.
Coinciding with the sacred Pujawali at Pura Dalem Sakenan, the young generation (yowana) of Serangan Village recently gathered to showcase their artistic prowess at the Serangan Penjor Festival 2026.
Artistry on a Grand Scale
This year’s festival saw five breathtaking, giant ceremonial penjor erected majestically in front of Pura Dalem Serangan. Far from ordinary decorations, these colossal structures are intricate masterpieces of sustainable design, meticulously crafted by hand using natural materials like bamboo, dried palm leaves (ental), and local flora.
What makes this event truly special is the spirit of collective youth action. The festival brought together the creative minds of five traditional sub-villages (banjar adat):
- Banjar Ponjok
- Banjar Kaja
- Banjar Kawan
- Banjar Peken
- Banjar Dukuh
Working late into the evening, these young artisans pooled their skills, passing down traditional weaving and carving techniques from village elders while infusing their own modern, creative flair.
Bridging Community and Cultural Sustainability
Now in its third consecutive year, the festival is a brilliant blueprint for collaborative cultural preservation, organized hand-in-hand with local community partners. It proves that when private enterprise, local leadership, and passionate youth come together, beautiful things happen.
