At Coco Social Fund, our mission is deeply rooted in the three pillars of Tri Hita Karana—and a vital part of that harmony is preserving the rich, living cultural heritage that makes Bali the spiritual heart of the world.

Recently, our team had the profound honor of witnessing and supporting one of the island’s most spectacular and sacred cultural traditions: the Mekotek Ceremony in Munggu Village.

The Legend and Spirit of the Wooden Spears

Mekotek is not just a festival; it is a powerful ancestral shield. Dating back to the 17th century to celebrate the triumph of the Mengwi Kingdom, this vibrant tradition is held every Kuningan (ten days after Galungan) to ward off negative energies, protect the village from misfortune, and bring blessings of fertility and prosperity to the land.

The energy is absolutely electric. Hundreds of village men, dressed in traditional ceremonial attire, assemble holding long, sturdy wooden sticks (traditionally spear shafts). As they converge, the sticks are slammed together into a massive, towering cone structure. To the roaring cheers of the crowd and the hypnotic rhythms of the Gamelan, brave individuals climb to the very peak of these wooden pyramids, symbolizing courage, unity, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.

Cultural Preservation as Social Sustainability

For us, true sustainability isn’t just about environmental initiatives like recycling or cleanups; it is also about cultural sustainability. Traditions like Mekotek are the lifeblood of Bali’s community resilience. It is a stunning display of gotong royong (mutual cooperation), where generations—from young boys to village elders—stand shoulder-to-shoulder to keep their ancestors’ legacy thriving.
